youth, joy, entertainment, and optimism; the essence of one shirley temple. for branding this pop icon i focused on contrasting and layering her with the depression because, essentially, the people hid behind the little girl’s smile to make it through the rough years of the 30s.

and also changing up my artifacts, still thinking about redoing my symbol as well
i have now got the separator wall built with stairs to the elevated floor. the entrance wall is curved, and the wall behind is also going be as well. that wall is going to have an image of the depression, then cut outs of shirley with openings for visitors to plug in their faces, will stand in front. and then the back large wall is still going to say ‘you gotta s-m-i-l-e’ and there are going to be circle mirrors arranged across the wall so visitors can practice their smiles and their shirley faces. and then there is the last long wall….i think i’m going to make a timeline with her movie career mixed with the events of the depression to bring some sort of quantitative aspect to the space.
Right now I’m working with the idea of hiding behind her smile like I did for the magazine article. On further development I plan on using transparency or vellum to make layers of images and text. There is a display of the dolls she has been made into, and also a screen on platform a few step up where her film or short bio would be playing.
with the covers i went with how the music made me want to move when listening to it and less about the lyrics considering they are not very deep and very repetitive; yes the bow is one of madonna’s staples, but for me it’s more about how you want to get up and dance and bob your head all around & the other song makes me want to rock out to on air guitar. the labels speak to the era of the songs, the background on holiday is a more implied, organized rendition of confetti for noting celebration.

from earlier we edited out the perfect round spheres and replaced them with polygonal ones. this goes along with the idea of artists being multifaceted and have many talents and sides to not just their practice but personality, they are able to take on many different roles. perfect spheres are not found in nature either so keeping with our inspiration of crystals this route seemed more logical. the structure is now more curved to enforce the idea of growth and to stray away from looking like it was leaning over.

crystalization occurs under intense pressure. it takes basic elements that combine and layer over time to create these beautiful forms. nature takes a pure substance (nothing) and layers grow under high pressure to create a crystal (something). and so we came up with this concept of artist’s taking a canvas or in this circumstance the pathway (nothing) and creating and crystal structure (something) growing out of it. this idea of pressure corrolates directly into the way that artists and students hold down an extreme amount of pressure on themselves and it also being put on them from professors or clients. the growing crystal structure portrays energy and the artistic spirit in an abstract way but still withholds substantial logic behind its existence.

design problem //
Create a three-dimensional design as a “site identifier” for the Kansas City Art Institute
the captures the essence of the college.
The problem that this particular side of the campus faces is the fact that there is no way to know that one is on the KCAI campus. The site needs something that will show the viewer that they are entering campus. The site identifier needs to represent the school as a whole and represent the artistic spirit.
site assessment //
The site for the proposed three-dimensional design is located on the Oak Street side of the KCAI campus. The walkway leads from the campus green to the street with an angle toward the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. The walkway is made up of small cement blocks with glass blocks inserted at regular intervals that light up with different colors at night. This site resides in between the Irving building, which holds Digital Media majors, and the Painting Building. There is traffic, pedestrian and automotive, going both parallel and perpendicular to the site. We, Bri and Morgan
, feel that it’s important that whatever “site identifier” is placed in the location should be able to be seen by both those who are walking and driving and by people that are passing by or going towards the site. We also feel that the organic quality of the campus green and the quality of the man made buildings around it should be tied together in a harmonious way, since both these factors are important for campus life.
